Class Offerings & Descriptions

Massage Therapy I

This course introduces concepts basic to the role of the massage therapist in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on beginning theory and techniques of body work as well as skill in therapeutic touch. Prepares graduates to work in direct client care settings to provide manipulation, methodical pressure, friction and kneading of the body for maintaining wellness or treating alterations in wellness throughout the lifespan. Students must complete the Spring Application Packet (returned to massage@carteret.edu) and attend an online orientation* by December 29, 2023 for the Spring Semester. 

*Students will be assigned an online orientation date after the submission of their application via email.

Massage Therapy II

This course provides an expanded knowledge and skill base for the massage therapist in a variety of clinical settings. Emphasis is placed on selected therapeutic approaches throughout the lifespan. Upon completion, students should be able to perform entry level therapeutic massage on various populations. Prerequisites: Completion of Massage Therapy I course. Textbooks: Success from the Start, Business Principles for Massage Therapists and A Massage Therapist’s Guide to Pathology. Prepayment required.

Nail Technology I & II

The Manicuring/Nail Technology continuing education program provides competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the nail technology industry. The program offers a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional nail technology, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other related topics. Students must meet the NC Board of Cosmetic Arts Manicure/Nail Technology 300 clock-hour/performance requirements and complete Nail Technology I and Nail Technology II courses to successfully complete the Manicure/Nail Technology Program. This program typically takes 16 weeks to complete

Graduates should be prepared to take the North Carolina Cosmetology State Board Licensing Exam after successful completion of both Nail Technology I & II. Upon passing the state exam, graduates will be state licensed and qualify for employment in beauty and nail salons, as a platform artist, and in related businesses.

Nurse Aide I

The Nurse Aide I training program is a 176-hour. The College has both Continuing Education and Curriculum nurse aide programs that prepare graduates to provide personal care and perform basic nursing skills. Emphasis is placed on person-centered care, the aging process, communication, safety/emergencies, infection prevention, legal and ethical issues, vital sign measurements, nutrition, elimination, basic restorative care/rehabilitation, dementia, mental health and end-of-life care.

This is a hybrid class, consisting of online, classroom laboratory and clinical instruction. A skills competency evaluation is required prior preceding to clinical. The theory online portion via Moodle is 53 hours, classroom labs is 63 hours and clinical is 60 hours. Clinical learning experiences are obtained in long-term care facilities. In all clinical settings, the Nurse Aide I student will work under the direction and supervision of licensed personnel.

Upon satisfactory completion of the NA I program, the graduate is eligible to take the North Carolina NNAAP exam administrated by Credential Exam for a fee of $140. Upon achieving a passing grade on both the written and skills portions of the exam, the graduate will be listed as a Nurse Aide I by the Division of Health Service Regulation.

Carteret Community College’s Nurse Aide I program is approved by the North Carolina State Department of Health and Human Services Division of Health Service Regulation.

Nurse Aide II

Carteret Community College’s Nurse Aide II (NAII) program is approved by the NC Board of Nursing (NCBON) and is taught by instructors approved to teach the program by the NCBON.

The Nurse Aide II training program is 176 hours of both Continuing Education (non-credited) and Curriculum (credited) course that prepares the students to perform, more complex skills for patients. The course provides the theoretical and practical knowledge and training required to be a competent NAII. Emphasis is on the role of the NAII and the physical needs of the patient specific to sterile procedures, oxygen therapy, urinary catheterization, wound care, tracheostomy care, elimination procedures, naso-suctioning, peripheral IV monitoring, and tube feeding.

This is a hybrid class, that consist of, 66 hours of classroom labs, 80 hours of acute care setting (hospital), and 30 hours of theory online (Moodle). After successful completion of the course, the graduate is eligible for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide II Registry.

Upon satisfactory completion of the NAII course, the graduate is eligible to be listed as a Nurse Aide II with the North Carolina Board of Nursing.

Requirement: listed on the North Carolina NAI Registry

Additional requirements:

NA II Orientation, by your instructor the first day of class.

Photo ID and non-laminated social security card. Uniform, royal blue pants and white scrub top with college logo (available at the college bookstore). Non-skid toe-closed, heel-closed shoes (sneakers are accepted). Detailed dress code will be review by your instructor. Textbook, Advanced Skills for Health Care Providers, 2th Edition, Acello (available in the college bookstore)

Immunizations:

  • TB skin test,Quantiferon-TB Blood Plus or risk assessment within a year of class
  • MMR – 2 documented vaccines or positive antibody titer
  • Varicella (Chicken Pox) – 2 documented vaccines or positive antibody titer
  • Tdap – 1 documented vaccine within 10 years
  • Hepatitis B – documented series of 3 vaccines or positive antibody titer
  • Flu vaccine – 1 documented vaccine, if clinical time is between October 1 and April 30
  • Covid requirement as of June 2023, require 2 documented vaccines unless approved for a medical and/or religious exception
  • Background check and urine drug screen is required after the start of class, $79

**Failure to produce documentation will prevent the student from being able to attend clinical and lead to dismissal from the program.

Phlebotomy Technician

Learn to perform a variety of blood collection methods using proper techniques and precautions including: vacuum collection devices, syringes, capillary skin puncture, butterfly needles and blood culture specimen collection. Includes lecture, lab and clinical hours. Upon completion, students are urged to seek Certified Phlebotomy Technician certification through the Association of Clinical Pathology. For additional training and certification, students should consider taking the Medical Lab Assistant course. Textbooks: “The Phlebotomy Handbook plus access code, 10th edition” and “AHA Basic Life Support Provider“. Note: Prepayment required and seats are limited.
